How to Measure Bra Size at Home with Six Measurements

Take three underbust and three bust measurements on bare breasts with a level, non-stretch tape.

Position-by-position instructions

Interactive Six-Measurement Bra Measuring Guide

Follow each view in order. The coral line is the measuring tape; position notes and fit checks explain what the diagram alone cannot show.

01
Underbust measurement

Loose underbust

FRONTSIDELEVELBREAST ROOT
Coral marks the measuring tape; the dotted guide shows the level line around the body.

Let the tape rest against the ribcage without pressing inward.

Body position
Stand naturally and breathe normally.
Tape position
Directly beneath the breast root, level around the back.

Check: The tape touches the skin but leaves no indentation.

Avoid: Do not leave a gap between the tape and the body.

02
Underbust measurement

Snug underbust

FRONTSIDELEVELBREAST ROOT
Coral marks the measuring tape; the dotted guide shows the level line around the body.

Pull the tape firm enough to feel like a supportive everyday band.

Body position
Stand naturally with a neutral breath.
Tape position
Use the same level line as the loose measurement.

Check: Firm and secure, but still comfortable and not painful.

Avoid: Do not move the tape lower to obtain a smaller number.

03
Underbust measurement

Tight underbust

FRONTSIDELEVELBREAST ROOT
Coral marks the measuring tape; the dotted guide shows the level line around the body.

Exhale fully, then pull the tape as tightly as possible.

Body position
Keep the torso upright through a complete exhale.
Tape position
Directly beneath the breast root on the same level line.

Check: This records ribcage compressibility, not wearable band tension.

Avoid: Do not treat this number as the recommended band size.

04
Bust measurement

Standing bust

FRONTSIDELEVELFULLEST POINT
Coral marks the measuring tape; the dotted guide shows the level line around the body.

Measure loosely around the fullest breast circumference while upright.

Body position
Stand naturally with arms relaxed and no bra or top.
Tape position
Across the fullest point in front and level around the back.

Check: The tape follows the tissue without flattening it.

Avoid: Do not measure only at the nipple if another point is fuller.

05
Bust measurement

Leaning bust

TORSO PARALLEL TO FLOORLET TISSUE HANG FREELY90 DEGREES
Coral marks the measuring tape; the dotted guide shows the level line around the body.

Lean forward 90 degrees and measure the fullest hanging circumference.

Body position
Keep the torso parallel to the floor and let tissue hang freely.
Tape position
Around the fullest point without forcing tissue together.

Check: Use a mirror or helper to check that the tape closes cleanly.

Avoid: Do not support or reshape the breasts while measuring.

06
Bust measurement

Lying bust

TISSUE SETTLES NATURALLY TO EACH SIDE
Coral marks the measuring tape; the dotted guide shows the level line around the body.

Lie flat and measure around the fullest point after tissue settles.

Body position
Lie on your back with the torso straight and shoulders relaxed.
Tape position
Around the widest settled circumference, without pressing inward.

Check: Let tissue move naturally toward the sides before reading the tape.

Avoid: Do not hold the tissue in its standing position.

What you need to measure bra size accurately at home

Use a flexible, non-stretch tape and a mirror or helper to check that it stays parallel to the floor. Measure without a bra or top, breathe normally unless the step specifically calls for a full exhale, and record every number before repeating a position.

How to take loose, snug and tight underbust measurements

01

Loose underbust measurement for bra band size

Wrap the tape directly beneath the breast root. Let it rest against the skin without pulling inward.

02

Snug underbust measurement for everyday band tension

Pull the tape comfortably firm, similar to a supportive band, without making it painful.

03

Tight underbust measurement for ribcage compressibility

Exhale fully and pull the tape as tightly as possible. This is a reference value, not the recommended band tightness.

How to take standing, leaning and lying bust measurements

04

Standing bust measurement around the fullest point

Stand naturally and wrap the tape around the fullest breast circumference without indenting tissue.

05

Leaning bust measurement at a 90-degree angle

Lean forward so the torso is parallel to the floor. Let tissue hang freely and measure the fullest circumference.

06

Lying bust measurement while supported by gravity

Lie on your back, gently arrange tissue to the sides as it naturally settles, and measure the fullest point.

Common mistakes when measuring bra size with a tape

A twisted tape, a tape that climbs up the back, a padded bra, compressed breast tissue or mixed units can shift the result. Repeat any surprising value and keep measurements to the nearest quarter inch or half centimeter where practical.
